Remember – companion exotic animals have been bred and are commercially available; however, they have unique needs and require specialized care. Research companion exotic animals PRIOR to bringing them into your family to ensure you are able to give them the care that they need.

Consider the following:

  • Lifespan
  • Diet
  • Social needs
  • Space requirements
  • Loud noises that are not tolerated in some areas (e.g. apartments)

Lastly, wild animals are NOT pets. While some exotic animals (e.g. primates, gators, kinkajous) can be purchased, it is almost inevitable that they will not adapt to the life of a companion animal as they are not domesticated, and they are at a higher risk of developing health issues due to receiving inadequate care.
